Interdisciplinary Studies.
This brand new NYSTEM-funded facility is equipped with state-of-the-art cell culturing and imaging equipment. The Stem Cell Research Core is a recharge facility designed to provide equipment and training to enable stem cell research at RPI, throughout the capital district and upstate NY using existing stem cell lines.
Equipment
Olympus VivaView – Cultured cells can be imaged without ever leaving the incubator. A unique CO2 incubator complete with O2 and CO2 control is outfitted with optics that provide superior deconvolved fluorescence and brightfield capabilities, including Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) over extended time periods for up to eight 35-mm coverslip-bottomed Petri dishes. Image acquisition and analyses of cell differentiation and activity are performed using MetaMorph imaging software.

Olympus IX51 inverted microscope – Fluorescence and brightfield (including phase contrast) capabilities. A DP20 2-Megapixel color camera provides crisp color images in real time (1600 x 1200 pixels at 15 frames per second).
Olympus CKX51 inverted microscope – Brightfield and phase contrast for routine cell culture use.
Olympus SZX 16 Motorized Stereo Microscopes – Fully outfitted with fluorescence and brightfield lighting options (darkfield, oblique, reflected) to view transfected or unstained tissue and cells. A DP72 12.8-Megapixel cooled CCD camera provides crisp color images (4140 x 3096 pixels).
Thermo Scientific Cellomics ArrayScan VTI – High-content screening (HCS) platform for automated fluorescence and brightfield imaging and quantitative analyses of fixed or live cells in microplates. The ArrayScan is fitted with environmental control (temperature, CO2, %RH). Image analysis can be performed in real time using nineteen different analytical “Bioapplications” algorithms. Applicataions include programs to study the cell cycle, cell motility, marker localization, membrane dynamics, neuronal differentiation, and protein translocation.

Thermo Scientific Cytomat 6001 C4 – CO2 and O2 incubator designed to handle storage of up to 189 standard microplates. The Cytomat is fully integrated with the ArrayScan imager, with a robotic handler can feed microplates directly into the Cytomat ArrayScan. A barcode reader provides simple and reliable plate identification and tracking.
