COVID-19 Research at Rensselaer

In December 2019, COVID-19 emerged as one of the most pressing health challenges of our time, with catastrophic consequences across our nation and the world. Since then, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have been working tirelessly to address the pandemic and mitigate its impact to society. Through collaborative and revolutionary research spanning the disciplines of biotechnology, data analytics, high performance computing, and the physical sciences, our researchers are making a vital difference. The Rensselaer Virtual Research Showcase 2020 highlighted COVID-19 research taking place at Rensselaer.

Virtual Research Showcase

During this webinar, you will hear firsthand as leading researchers discuss recent developments in therapeutics to block virus entry at the cellular level; the use of epidemiological modeling and data analytics to track and battle the spread of COVID-19; and the implementation of new processes to address the critical need for personal protective equipment.

A presentation titled “Understanding and Tackling COVID: From Bench to Bedside,” by Deepak Vashishth, director of CBIS, showcases some of the work being done within the facility. The presentation also cites a Mount Sinai COVID-19 anti-coagulation algorithm through which patients with moderate or severe COVID-19 are admitted and various treatments are administered depending on level of risk, and discusses a “Bench to Bedside” model in which both imaging and non-imaging data can be used to determine feature sections, outcome predictions, and ICU admission predictions.
