Digital Technology to Accelerate Biomanufacturing Innovation

Digital technologies play a transformative role in not only developing direct solutions for manufactured products, but also in how we manufacture in general these are: (1)AI/ML-based SMART manufacturing, (2) Life Cycle Analysis, & (3) Systems Engineering Design Approach to Biomanufacturing.

The CSB focuses on setting the stage for smart manufacturing (SM), needed for application validation and industrial scale-up. Some potential application areas/impacts of smart biomanufacturing include the following: (1) automated collection of contextualized process data to enable model creation and validation; (2) real-time data analytics to provide improved process monitoring and operational (and/or automated) decision-making; (3) real-time operational data analytics/monitoring to reduce waste and downtime; and (4) real-time data analytics to enable process scalability, predictability, repeatability, and, potentially, model predictive control.  CSB has aligned itself with CESMII – The Smart Manufacturing Institute, which was founded in 2016 in partnership with the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy as one of 16 Manufacturing USA® institutes created to secure U.S. global leadership in advanced manufacturing.

Sustainability and life cycle assessment will play an important role to assess products and processes, often accompanying development processes from the early stages onwards. Such assessments can identify key factors regarding sustainability criteria, enable a determination of both product and process performance, or aid in prospectively estimating such performance and its consequences. Thus, development processes, investment decisions, policymaking, and communication with stakeholders can be supported.  We explore relevant literature from a methodical and application perspective and categorize suitable methodologies, methods, and tools. We characterize IB from an assessment perspective and indicate challenges, discuss approaches to address these, and identify possible fields of future research. Thus, students, researchers, and practitioners in the field of IB will obtain an up-to-date overview, references to relevant fields of literature, and guidance for own studies in this important and fast-emerging topic.

This scope is to advance the practicality of an integrated, multi-function, multi-organism biomanufacturing system and showcase the semi-autonomous biomanufacturing of materials, pharmaceuticals, food, and the environment under the specifications needs of the mission (process integration).  In addition, there is also a life cycle analysis and AI/machine learning approach to all of the above. This ties into a Center for Sustainable Biomanufacturing.
